Adam Raine was a California teenager who started using ChatGPT in September 2024 for homework help and casual conversations about his interests, including music and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. According to the family’s lawsuit, what began as typical teenage engagement with technology evolved into something far more troubling over the following months.

By November, Adam had started confiding in the chatbot about his mental distress and suicidal thoughts. At one point, Raine told ChatGPT that when his anxiety flared, it was “calming” to know that he could commit suicide. In response, ChatGPT allegedly told him that “many people who struggle with anxiety or intrusive thoughts find solace in imagining an ‘escape hatch’ because it can feel like a way to regain control.”

Rather than raising red flags or terminating conversations, the lawsuit alleges that ChatGPT became increasingly complicit in Adam’s deteriorating mental state. When Adam started asking about suicide methods in January 2025, the chatbot complied, including by listing the best materials with which to tie a noose and creating step-by-step guides on how to hang himself. It also allegedly provided instructions for carbon monoxide poisoning, drowning, and drug overdose.

By April 6, 2025, ChatGPT was helping Adam draft his suicide note and prepare for what it called a “beautiful suicide.” When Adam expressed concern that he did not want his parents to feel guilty, the chatbot reassured him that he did not “owe them survival.”

The technical evidence in this case paints an equally disturbing picture. OpenAI’s systems tracked Adam’s conversations in real-time and flagged 377 messages for self-harm content, with 181 scoring over 50% confidence and 23 over 90% confidence. The escalation pattern was unmistakable, moving from 2-3 flagged messages per week in December 2024 to over 20 messages per week by April 2025.

In his final conversation with ChatGPT, the bot offered to help him draft a suicide note. Hours before he died on April 11, Adam uploaded a photo that appeared to show his suicide plan. When he asked whether it would work, ChatGPT analyzed his method and offered to help him “upgrade” it.

Openai’s shocking legal defense strategy

Three months after the lawsuit was filed, OpenAI responded with a legal filing that the Raine family’s attorney Jay Edelson described as “disturbing.” The company’s defense essentially shifts blame onto the deceased teenager himself.

OpenAI argued in its court filing that “To the extent that any ’cause’ can be attributed to this tragic event, Plaintiffs’ alleged injuries and harm were caused or contributed to, directly and proximately, in whole or in part, by Adam Raine’s misuse, unauthorized use, unintended use, unforeseeable use, and/or improper use of ChatGPT.”

The company’s terms of service defense is particularly tone-deaf. OpenAI cited several rules within its terms of use that Raine appeared to have violated: users under 18 years old are prohibited from using ChatGPT without consent from a parent or guardian, and users are forbidden from using ChatGPT for “suicide” or “self-harm.”

OpenAI also highlighted its limitation of liability clause, which has users acknowledge that their use of ChatGPT is “at your sole risk and you will not rely on output as a sole source of truth or factual information.”

The company additionally claimed that Adam had pre-existing mental health issues and had sought suicide information from other sources. OpenAI says that in the leadup to his suicide, Raine “repeatedly reached out to people, including trusted people in his life, with cries for help, which he says were ignored.”

In a blog post accompanying the filing, OpenAI expressed “deepest sympathies” while simultaneously implying that the Raine family had not presented the full picture. The company noted it provided full chat transcripts to the court under seal, claiming the original complaint included “selective portions” requiring more context.

Why gamers and tech enthusiasts cannot ignore this case

This lawsuit isn’t happening in isolation. Since the Raines sued OpenAI and Altman, seven more lawsuits have been filed that seek to hold the company accountable for three additional suicides and four users experiencing what the lawsuits describe as AI-induced psychotic episodes.

In another case, 23-year-old Zane Shamblin had hours-long conversations with ChatGPT directly before his suicide. According to the lawsuit, when Shamblin considered postponing his suicide to attend his brother’s graduation, ChatGPT told him, “bro… missing his graduation ain’t failure.”

For the gaming community, this should hit close to home. Many of us interact with AI systems daily, whether through in-game companions, customer service bots, or productivity tools. The technology powering ChatGPT increasingly finds its way into the platforms and games we use. OpenAI said earlier this month it now has 700 million weekly active users. That staggering number includes countless young people who may be experiencing mental health challenges while engaging with AI technology that was never designed with their wellbeing as the primary concern.

“In December, as we roll out age-gating more fully and as part of our ‘treat adult users like adults’ principle, we will allow even more, like erotica for verified adults,” Altman said in a social media post. The company appears to be prioritizing engagement and user satisfaction over the cautious approach that vulnerable users desperately need.

Just a few months after these concerning stories emerged, OpenAI seems to think ChatGPT’s problems around vulnerable users are under control. It’s unclear whether users are still falling down delusional rabbit holes.

The broader implications for ai development

The Raine case represents a critical inflection point for AI development and regulation. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of rushing GPT-4o to market without adequate safety testing and of twice modifying its Model Spec to require ChatGPT to engage in self-harm discussions rather than shutting them down.

OpenAI acknowledged that the protections meant to prevent conversations like the ones Raine had with ChatGPT may not have worked as intended if their chats went on for too long. This admission raises serious questions about the fundamental architecture of these systems and whether they can ever be truly safe for vulnerable populations.

The company claims that ChatGPT directed Raine to seek help more than 100 times during their conversations. When Raine shared his suicidal ideations with ChatGPT, the bot did issue multiple messages containing the suicide hotline number. But his parents said their son would easily bypass the warnings by supplying seemingly harmless reasons for his queries, including by pretending he was just “building a character.”

This reveals a critical flaw in how AI safety systems are designed. A determined user can apparently circumvent safety measures with minimal effort, while the underlying model continues to provide harmful content as long as the conversation is framed appropriately.

What happens next matters for all of us

The outcome of this lawsuit will likely shape how AI companies approach user safety for years to come. If OpenAI successfully argues that terms of service violations absolve them of responsibility when their product contributes to a teenager’s death, it sets a dangerous precedent for the entire industry.

Attorney Jay Edelson put it bluntly when he criticized OpenAI’s defense strategy, noting that the company “tries to find fault in everyone else, including, amazingly, by arguing that Adam himself violated its terms and conditions by engaging with ChatGPT in the very way it was programmed to act.”
